Can we take a moment to address the idiocy of people who say LGBT/Ally Obama supporters
/TL;DR anyone claiming the LGBT community and their allies only support the president because he came out for marriage equality, and then say that whole thing was for show are ignoring the unprecedented action this president and his administration have taken to improve the lives of LGBT americans./
ONLY support him because he came out in support of marriage equality.
The argument often goes that he did it during an election year for as a fake appeal to the LGBT community and their supporters blah blah blib bleh bluh I know you’ve seen it.
Yes the LGBT community cares about marriage equality but it isn’t the only reason to support him.
I mean it’s not like he
- Implemented U.S. Agency for International Development policy encouraging contractors to implement and enforce non-discrimination policies including sexual orientation and gender identity
- Ended the ban that prohibited people with HIV/AIDS from entering the United States
- Created the first-ever U.S. government strategy dedicated to combating human rights abuses against LGBT persons abroad and made it clear the United States will use all the tools of American diplomacy to promote LGBT rights abroad
- Fought for the rights of LGBT persons worldwide by co-sponsoring the first UN resolution focused solely on LGBT rights, and preventing the removal of sexual orientation from a UN resolution condemning extrajudicial killings
- Directed agencies working abroad to combat the criminalization of LGBT status
- Directed the Departments of State and Homeland Security to ensure LGBT refugees and asylum-seekers have equal access to protection and assistance
- Ended the Social Security Administration’s gender “no-match” letters and allowed for true gender passports
- Ensured that transgender Americans can receive true gender passports without surgery
- Established guidelines to help protect transgender federal employees from discrimination in the workplace
- Made sure transgender veterans receive respectful care according to their true gender through the Veterans Health Administration
- Announced HUD’s new rule protecting against housing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity
- Created a National Resource Center for LGBT seniors and awarded a grant to SAGE (Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders), supporting the first community center for LGBT seniors
- Released America’s first comprehensive plan to prevent and end homelessness, including homelessness among LGBT youth
- Awarded a grant to the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Community Center to work with LGBT foster youth
- The administration protected LGBT employees from workplace discrimination by adopting an equal-opportunity employment policy that includes both sexual orientation and gender identity
- Ordered the federal government to extend key benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees
- Took action to ensure LGBT federal employees have the same protections as straight employees by clarifying the Family and Medical Leave Act to include protections for LGBT employees

- Signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law
- Nominated four openly gay appointees to the federal bench—more than any president in history
- Clarified the Family and Medical Leave Act to ensure family leave for LGBT employees
- Called for equal treatment of same-sex adoptive parents in his official proclamation for National Adoption Month
- Clarified the meaning of “family” to include LGBT relationships, helping protect bi-national families threatened by deportation
- Declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and endorsed the Respect for Marriage Act, which would repeal DOMA
